At Phoenix, our approach to animal care is guided by the internationally recognised Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, ensuring every animal in our care has the opportunity to live a healthy, enriching and fulfilling life. 

Freedom from Hunger and Thirst 

Animals have continuous access to fresh water and receive appropriate nutrition to maintain health, wellbeing and energy levels. 

Freedom from Discomfort 

Animals are provided with suitable shelter, comfortable resting areas and environments designed to meet their individual species-specific needs. 

Freedom from Pain, Injury and Disease 

Regular veterinary care, health checks, preventative healthcare and prompt treatment help ensure our animals remain happy and healthy. 

Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour 

Animals are given sufficient space, companionship where appropriate, enrichment activities and opportunities to behave naturally, graze, forage, explore, play and socialise. 

Freedom from Fear and Distress 

Animals are handled with kindness, patience and respect, ensuring they feel safe, secure and able to make choices about their participation in activities. If an animal chooses not to engage, that choice is always respected. 

Welfare First 

We carefully consider each animal’s individual needs.

• Social needs

Our animals participate only in activities that are appropriate for them and are always supervised by experienced handlers. If an animal chooses not to participate, that choice is respected. Their welfare always comes first. 

Performing Animals Licence 

Phoenix is proud to hold a current Performing Animals Licence, providing assurance that our practices are regularly reviewed and meet recognised standards of animal welfare and care. All visits and activities are carefully planned with the wellbeing of our animals at their centre. Animal welfare is always prioritised above events, appearances or activities. 

Veterinary Care 

We work closely alongside experienced veterinary professionals to ensure our animals receive excellent care throughout their lives.
